Description
You are buying or bidding on a very rarevintage set of Red Owl Store employee pieces of jewelry. First is a Red Owl necklace for recognition of 20 years of service in a gold tone and a small real diamond below owl. No precious metal marks on pendant itself, but necklace chain clasp and ring on pendant say "A&Z 14KGF" which would refer to the A&Z Chain Co. which went out of business in 1975. The diamond tests as genuine...small, but real. The bracelet has a hallmark on rear that I can't find an identity on (a "B" inside a building or schoolhouse ?) and "10K". Bracelet clasp has "1/20 12KGF L.G.B." which would be the mark of Lloyd Garfield Balfour, the founder of Balfour Jewelry. This set of initials hallmark were used in the 40's. These were found together at an estate sale, so I don't doubt that they both were from the same ex- employee. Red Owl itself was
founded in 1922 with a single store in Rochester, Mn. where it sold groceries, dry goods and coal. “Be wise, burn Red Owl coal!” was the original slogan. The company was led by Ford Bell, a son of General Mills founder James Ford Bell. In
1988 Red Owl grocery stores and its distribution system was acquired by Supervalu. Measurements in pics. Don't miss out on these if you collect Red Owl memorabilia.... something like these are as they would say, "Rarer than hens teeth".
