ANOTHER UNCOMMON
vintage political election
campaign pinback button for your growing collection...
One of the all-time great
"LOSERS"
....California Rep. Jerry Voorhis' 1946 loss to an unknown Richard Nixon in the 12th district of Orange County catapulted the young Nixon to congress and beyond...
THE REST...AS THEY SAY...IS HISTORY.
There are a number of folks who collect the 'pre-presidential/vice-presidential' early career items like Ronald Reagan for Governor or Harry Truman for U. S. Senator. I was thinking the other day how it would be neat to specialize in
'LOSERS'
to all the many presidents/vice-presidents before we knew their names...
candidates who lost elections to future presidents/vice-presidents and who helped send them on their way to political stardom.
California Governor Pat Brown lost to Reagan in 1966, for example. If Reagan had lost that campaign, he may very well have never won any later election and would have likely missed being president altogether.
Think of all the possibilities of the alterations to history if Reagan had LOST his very first election campaign in 1966 to Governor Brown.
In that vein, here is a really scarce local button from the
'LOSER'
to Richard Nixon in
Nixon's
VERY FIRST ELECTION CAMPAIGN
...for congress in 1946. A youthful Nixon was 'drafted' by citizens of the 12th district to return to California from a naval career and challenge U. S. Rep. Jerry Voorhis, D-CA, whom Nixon defeated.
THE REST...AS THEY SAY...IS HISTORY.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL...
He Leadeth Me
In pastures green?
Not always; sometimes He
who knoweth best, in kindness leadeth me
In many ways where heavy shadows be.
Out of the sunshine warm and soft and bright...
Out of the sunshine into the darkest night,
I oft would faint with sorrow and affright,
Only for this...I know He holds my hand;
so whether in the green or desert land
I trust although I may not understand.
And by still waters?
No, not always so;
Ofttimes the heavy tempests round me blow,
And o'er my soul the waters and billows go.
But when the storms beat loudest and I cry
aloud for help, the Master standeth by
And whispers to my soul, "Lo, it is I."
Above the tempest wild I hear Him say,
Beyond this darkness lies a perfect day.
In every path of thine I lead the way.
So whether on the hilltops high and fair
I dwell, or in the sunless valleys where
The shadows lie...what matters?  He is there.
And more than this, where'er the pathway lead
He gives to me no helpless broken reed,
But His own hand, sufficient for my need.
So where He leads me, I can safely go,
And in the blest hereafter I shall know
Why in His wisdom, He hath led me so.
